The mission of the Michigan Lean Consortium (MLC) is to engage, connect, and develop people and processes in continuous improvement and Lean initiatives to positively impact Michigan.

The MLC is a membership based nonprofit organization working to support organizations and professionals on their Lean journeys by providing a range of learning events, networking opportunities, and other resources. Events include training sessions, webinars, coffee chats, sessions related to specific industry of practice, and an annual conference. The MLC also connects with our members through our website, social media, and a monthly newsletter.

Event Planning Student Volunteer Apply

About the Position:

Michigan Lean Consortium’s Events team is seeking ambitious candidates who are eager to learn more about event management. This volunteer position will provide valuable hands-on, professional experience in a non-profit organization and the opportunity to work in a fast-paced event environment. The position will offer a chance to learn about event management through in-person and virtual projects and help prepare students for future job opportunities. Students are expected to have a growing interest in event management. 

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the event planning, set-up, and execution of MLC Signature Events:
      • Annual Conference: A Multi-day professional development conference 

      • One-Day Professional Summits 

    • Assist with event planning, set-up, and execution of small MLC events:
      • Virtual Coffee
      • Learning Events
      • Facility/Gemba Tours
    • Attend events, as necessary.
    • Assist with securing vendors, entertainment, and exhibitors for events.
    • Create and organize signage and materials for events.
    • Follow-up with attendees after events to thank them for their participation.
    • Assist with special projects and event research.
    • Perform routine office work.
    • Provide general assistance/information to members and guests.
    • Identify attendees who are not currently MLC members and provide their contact information to the Events and Membership teams.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Current student pursuing a degree in business, hospitality management, or any other applicable degree.
    • 60 hours of credits by date of application.
    • Experience using various social media platforms.
    • Good verbal and written communication skills.
    • Basic understanding of event planning techniques.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Event planning experience
    • Networking experience

    Grant Writing Student Volunteer Apply

    About the Position:

    As a nonprofit organization we support our events and resources through membership and philanthropic activities. As our organization is growing we continue to seek grant support as an additional revenue stream. Grant project focuses includes, but is not limited to, membership scholarships, program development, and staff support. 

    The MLC Grant Writing Student Volunteer is responsible for a range of grant writing activities, from planning to execution of content. The volunteer will work under the guidance of an MLC Board Member and in connection with MLC staff. While the volunteer is assigned to specific grant writing projects, they are also able to attend MLC networking and learning events. 

    Responsibilities:

    • Work under the guidance of an MLC Board Member
    • Research available and applicable grant opportunities. 
    • Coordinate the grant application calendar.  
    • Communicate with MLC Board Members, staff, and volunteers to write program development related content. 
    • Cultivate and steward grantmakers, foundations, or corporations as needed to develop relationships necessary for successful grant application submission. 
    • Complete and submit grant applications in a timely manner. 

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Current student pursuing a bachelor’s degree in social work, marketing, communications, or any other applicable degree.
    • 80 hours of credits by date of application.
    • Good verbal and written communication skills.
    • Organization skills. 
    • Basic understanding of grant writing techniques and familiarity with philanthropy. 

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Experience managing and writing grant applications.

    Marketing Student Volunteer Apply

    About the Position:

    Connection and communication are essential functions of the MLC. To grow our network, we focus on marketing the value of being a member with the MLC as well as the opportunities to attend a range of learning events. Our marketing efforts are the connection between the MLC strategy and our membership. We are significantly growing our traditional marketing approaches by adding more standardization, visual content, and marketing analytics to our practices. 

    The MLC Marketing Student Volunteer is responsible for a range of marketing activities, from planning to execution of content. The volunteer will work under the guidance of the MLC Board Marketing Liaison and in connection with MLC staff. While the volunteer is assigned to specific marketing projects, they are also able to attend MLC networking and learning events. 

    Responsibilities:

    • Work under the guidance of an MLC Board Member
    • Create promotional materials as needed for events and announcements with MLC branding. 
    • Collect qualitative and quantitative data from marketing campaigns.
    • Assist in the implementation and monitoring MLC social media strategy to increase brand awareness and drive traffic to our website.
    • Assist in the development of writing a monthly editorial calendar. 
    • Engage with followers on behalf of the MLC.
    • Assist with developing new paths and opportunities for sponsorship.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Current student pursuing a bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, or any other applicable degree.
    • 80 hours of credits by date of application.
    • Experience in social media. 
    • Good verbal and written communication skills.
    • Basic understanding of marketing techniques. 

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Networking experience.
    • Experience using marketing tools such as Canva or Adobe Illustrator.
