Just One Person’s Opinion: The Value of Empathy

When we talk about value in Lean, it's about what the customer deems important. In Human-Centered Design (HCD), empathy takes center stage - understanding and valuing individual experiences and emotions. But what happens when we encounter the phrase "that's just one person's opinion"? This talk delves into how even one person's opinion is an opportunity for exploration, understanding, and the potential to uncover hidden facets of value that can drive meaningful improvements. You’ll learn a practical way to gather qualitative data needed for human-centered continuous improvement.

Jason Wilkinson
Human-Centered Design Manager, Office of Continuous Improvement, State of Michigan

Jason Wilkinson is the Human-Centered Design Manager for the Office of Continuous Improvement. During his nine years with the State of Michigan, he also served as Director of COVID Testing Collection and Coordination for MDHHS, Strategy and Performance Manager for the Office of Good Government, and Strategic Communications Manager for the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency. Prior to join the State of Michigan, Jason worked for the Pikes Peak Area Council of Governments in Colorado. He is also an officer in the US Navy Reserve. Jason earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Michigan and a Master of Public Administration from the University of Colorado. He is a certified Project Management Professional and holds a certificate in Strategic Performance Management from the National Center for Public Performance. Jason and his wife, Cindy, live in Lansing with their two daughters.
